An interference engine is an engine whose piston can hit the intake/exhaust valves if not properly timed. Non-interference engines won't have piston/valve contact, even if not properly timed because they never share the same space (unless something were to break).

Interference - Piston all the way up, valve all the way down = they make contact
Non Interference - Piston all the way up, valve all the way down = no contact.

That said, I don't know what the 5.0 is, but I'd guess that it IS an interference engine.

My understanding of non-interference engine means that even if the timing chain or belt were to break causing the timing to be off, the valves do not extended far enough down in the combustion chamber to hit the top of the piston.

A 5.0L, 11:1 compression engine, making over 400hp is most likely an interference engine.

I have heard of that now that you explain it... no clue though on the question. Thanks for the answer!
I would imagine that it is an interference engine, but maybe they figured out how to make it not destroy itself when it destroys itself, ford is getting smarter lol

Mainly a concern with engines that have belt cam drives. OHC/DOHC Ford V8's have been chain drive to the cams. Little chance of mis-timing unless there is some significant wear of the guides, tensioners and chains.

well I just had the cam tower break. which the tensioner for the chain is connected to so that is why I am asking.

Siggy and Moose are correct.

All Ford Modular V8's are interference engines.
