Are your keys/remote units the Ford Corporate one piece unit? Fragile?
My dad's 09 Sable keys are the one piece remote/key thing...and after a few years of use the keys have cracks on the plastic remote housing with the one key nearly breaking upon startup if the user does not turn it by gripping just the key piece itself (hope that makes sense). This doesn't seem normal IMO.
Do you S197 dudes have the same key/remote setup? Is yours also a little fragile? We do not have a habit of breaking keys as our other previous vehicles' keys have held up just fine.

Ours (at least mine, and i'm 99 percent sure the others are as well) are 2 pieces, 1 key and 1 FOB. Its the same setup Ford seems to have used for years, and haven't really had any breaking issues. The keys seem pretty solid all the way through, would have to get whacked pretty hard to crack. Now losing them on the other hand is a different story....

^Same.
The fobs are made of pretty thick plastic, I've dropped them, scraped them across the ground, and even hit them with a door (all inadvertently) and mine still looks like new minus a little dirt on the buttons from repeated use.
You could probably find a new case/housing online (ebay) for pretty reasonable costs. Like, this was a popular mod a while back for S197 owners who wanted the switchblade design for their keys. Came with everything you needed as I recall, so I'd bet your dad's car might have something similar with just the shell for your switchblade design.

I have a one piece "switchblade" key with the buttons built in from iKeyless for my '06 GT. I have been using it for several years with zero problems. I had to have the key cut, and I programmed the buttons myself. It was reasonable too.
