Mustang GT 4500rpm when it starts
Hey guys ,
I noticed while I was driving today that my car sits at 4500 rpm when it is not moving. it goes into red zone (7-8) while moving.
do you guys know where to adjust it? I used to have a motorcycle and it is very easy on it to change.
some information about my car.
2005 Mustang GT. 80k miles.
SCT tuner with JLT CAI.(<-- everything done by previous owner)
I have not experienced any other problems in 3 months.(except front lower ball joints)

It sounds like your stepper motor is most likely sticking and going out. This is very common in the 2005 and 2006 models. I have the same issue with my RPM guage and temperature gauge. My RPM is usually off between 250 RPM - 350 RPM. My temperature gauge does not work when it is 60 degrees or cooler. When it does work, it sometimes sticks and will be at the half way mark, then when it warms up, it goes over to the HOT. I've had the thermostat tested and the radiotor fan and everything works fine.

Is there anyway that I can test this? 250-350RPM range is ok but it is hsowing as 4500 base RPM.
If this is the case then I shouldn't be worried about the engine right? also is this a costly replace? thanks for your help.
One more thing is the outside temp is around 30-35.

If not, try disconnecting the negative terminal on your battery for 30 min., reconnect and see if this corrects the RPM gauge position. This may reset it temporarily. The shop did this with my temp gauge.
It can be a costly fix if you have a company or dealership do it. The whole cluster would need to be removed from dash, remove broken stepper motor and solder new one on.
There are companies that offer this type of service. Do a search here on the forums and a google search and see if there are any local companies in your area.

No I haven't noticed any high idling. I will check again to make sure.
I will disconnect the battery and try to reset.
I found this

I might be able to do this on my own. I already replaced my Stereo twice and feel comfortable doing things like this.
this may not be a related but when I step on gas pedal too much at signals my rare wheel spins a lot like a mini burnout before moving. this shouldn't be a issue right.

If the car is not idling real high and disconnecting battery corrects the RPM issue, it is most likely the stepper motor issue. As verification, you could probably take the car to a shop and have them check it out too.
Nope, you just need to get used to the clutch and feather the gas a little and you should be fine. I do that on occassion as well, especially now it is cold outside and the tires are harder and don't grip as good.

I just went to a Mechanic near me and He didn't even look at my car. He said mostly problem with engine and it take 1699$ for any engine diagnostics. I said no thx.
I observed couple of things though.
1. It doesn't do high idling at signals.
2. when engine is off. RPM sits at 3000
So I am thinking 4500 is normal if it starts at 3000.
