Default tire size help

I'm wanting to pick up some new tires today... My only problem is knowing what is the widest rear tire i can run while keeping my stock 225/60/17 up front.... I'm wanting to just pick up some wider tires for the rear. Any help would be appreciated. I really only need 2 tires... So just figured I would staggar my tires.

It depends on the width of your wheel. Somewhere in the OM and stamped on the wheel itself (probably on the backside of the wheel so you'll need to get under the car). You can go to tirerack.com or other websites that list the specs for the tires they sell (or the tire manufacturers site). They'll give you recommended wheel max and mins for a given tire size.

With a 225 OE tire, I'd guess that your wheel is 8.0" wide, give or take 0.5". If so, then about 255 is as wide as you can go. BUT BE SURE THAT THE OVERALL O.D. of the new tire is as close to the O.D. of the OE tire as you can get.

Agree with Nuke - need to know the wheel width before any sound recommendations can be made.

These newer years with even taller tires are harder to work with. Used to be you could recommend 255/50-17 without much thought, but that size will be about half an inch shorter than your front tires which might be enough to notice. Offhand, I'd say 245/55-17 now (and good luck finding a wide variety to choose from).

Agreed. There is slim pickins at that size. Most are all season, grand touring, run flats, or truck tires. There is a Pirelli P zero but its 278 bucks, at that price, staggered isnt worth it.

60's?!?!?!? I would think that your tire OD is wayyyyy off the stock tire OD which would also throw your speedometer way off, let alone screw with your overall drive ratio.

Haha that's funny. Close to the size of my Tacoma's tires. No way in hell I would put that much sidewall on a Mustang. I wouldn't even bother trying to stagger the tires if you're keeping the stock rims...If you were putting bigger rims on the back then yeah it makes sense.
