You guys did your part and helped out too. Thanks all, now I just gonna wait for my wheels!
That's the 05-09 GT500 tire sizing. I'm sure you'll like it.

I have those size tires with this suspension setup, and it works well:

yeah i'll get pictures up as soon as the wheels get here. could be as early as this weekend. and to say im stoked is understating it. i can't wait to get a suspension installed, but that's likely gonna wait until next year's money rolls through (earlier if i win the lotto or a sweepstakes).

i mean, people are talking about putting 285/45/18 tires on 10" or 10.5" wheels, but technically 285 millimeters is over 11 inches. i mean, if i could stretch the sizes out a little bit, then i can make the 18 inch wheels match my stock diameter more closely. i just don't know how far is too far.
Congrats on the wheels and tires!

Yes 285mm is over 11" in width but you can't use that directly for selecting your rim width. That is the section width or widest part of the tire. You have to look at the rim width which is where the bead of the tire is.

Typically the section and bead width are standard across the brands and related so it is inferred that a tire with XXX section width will fit on XX-XX rim widths because that size of section width will have a known (corresponding) rim width.

a 285 can fit comfortably on rim widths from 9" to 10.5". As an example I have 275's on my stock 8.5 inch wide rim. Looks better to me than the stock 255 width and is a good fit.

Realizing that you've already ordered your tires/wheels . . . what you do is go to Tire Rack or similar sites and track down the specs for whatever tires you're considering. Even if you can't find your specific tire brand, the range of acceptable wheel widths for any given size is uniform enough throughout the tire industry that you can use those numbers directly. There are a few exceptions, but only a very few.

A 285/40-18 fits on wheels between 9.5" and 11", with a 10" wide wheel being the width that it was on when its actual tabulated measurements were made (this width may be the width wheel that the tire was primarily designed around, although that is not necessarily guaranteed).

275/40's need wheels that are at least 9" wide. Half an inch too narrow is riskier than half an inch too wide, with additional sidewall heating due to greater flexing and where the temperature concentrates being the important considerations. 275/40's on 8.5" wide wheels is do-able for the short term, but it really isn't a wheel and tire combination that you should intentionally choose for the "get it done and forget it for the next 20,000 miles or so" attitude that describes the way that just about everybody treats their tire purchases.

When you stretch the tire beads further apart on wider wheels, the actual diameter actually shrinks a tiny bit. In most cases, you can stretch half an inch beyond the mfr's max recommended without problems other than an increased risk of curb rash on your wheels and a slightly harsher ride. A dedicated autocross-only setup might go even a little wider than that, but would have no business being used in general daily driving service.

i read this at first on my phone and was a little lost, but now i sat down at a computer and really read through it thoroughly. i understand what is going on now. and yeah, what i ended up doing was hopping on tirerack and seeing that the same size tires fit on the wheel dimensions i was looking at, so i knew it would work (or hoped). but now i know for sure (in addition to the fact that AM already shipped the product to me ha).

wheels should be getting dropped off by the UPS guy in a couple hours... i took the day off work for the Cincinnati Reds' Opening Day against the Angels. so looking like i get to install the tires, maybe take it for a quick spin, and then kick back and watch the ol' Red-legs while eating a braut and drinkin' a beer. life is good. thanks for the info!
