As far as the dusty engine bay, whenever I wash our Stangs, the engine bay gets wiped down. Once it's clean, it's pretty easy to keep it that way. I usually let the engine bay in my SUV go longer and it will sometimes take the pressure washer to get it "right".

I've never used a torque wrench on my car, don't even own one!

Even building engines, I've only used a torque wrench on bearing caps and head bolts. I do like to use one on lug nuts, though. You can guess torque pretty close from the size of the bolt being tightened. Might be good for the OP to learn torque values and grasp an understanding of how tight each is.
