Can I pop a flame from exhaust?
May sound a little ricey-ish, but lately I was wondering if I could tweak anything on the car to shoot a small flame from the exhaust. I'm a photographer and I thought it would be awesome if I could manage to capture that from my own car. Nothing major though, just like a small backfire.
I have an SCT tuner if that helps. Also, don't feel like buying coils and cutting holes in exhaust pipes... Did some googling and people were talking about stuff like that. One guy recommended propane (are you kidding me? I hope he wasn't serious lol).

These days with catalytic converters and reduced valve overlap, there's really nothing left in the exhaust system to make a flame with. If there were you would fail the unburned HC emissions test. I'm sure that's why the other person suggested a propane nozzle at the exhaust outlet.
Why not just Photoshop a flame in?

nah. back in the day, people would do this by revving the engine and then slamming the choke* shut, then triggering a spark plug in the tailpipe to light off the raw air:fuel mix belching out. On a modern car, even without cats, there's not enough unburned hydrocarbons in the exhaust to do this.
and yes, the guy recommending propane was serious. there are a few people out there on the car show/cruise circuit who do the whole "flamethrower exhaust" thing using a propane tank and a spark plug in the tailpipe.
* see, a choke was this thing on the carburetor** which allowed for a richer fuel:air mix for when the engine was cold.
** see, a carburetor was this thing that used to sit on top of the engine which contained the throttle plates, a venturi, and did a barely-credible job at fuel metering...

hey i know guys back in the day would have a coil and spark plug set up. to spark in the tail pipe to ignite a rich fuel mixture. would shoot 1 foot flames out the back. Today it would be easier to do it with just a pizo ingnitor if you could run a rich enough mixture. Definitly would rec a cat delete for it.

msd 2 step rev limiters cut spark not fuel, so it may make a flame if you stay on it with a hot exhaust. Like i said though im not too sure if it actually would work. You could also run a ghost cam when you remove the cats too, which does make the exhaust hotter..
edit: nevermind on the ghost cam for the 4.6 that is not possible.

For what it's worth, it's definitely possible to do. I had a friend tell me I shot a flame out the back in my Terminator one time when I hit the rev limiter (whoops, that thing went fast down a hill!). Like Andy said, if the rev limiter cuts the ignition and extra fuel gets dumped in hot exhaust then you might just get a flame. I don't know that I'd be trying to reproduce it though.

You can also get the car to dump fuel by turning it off while driving put the key back to the run position and pumping the gas a few times and recranking the car.
But of you still have cats and/or a chambered exhaust this will slowly blow them apart. I know this from experience

Here's an example. Although this was a bit more than I was looking for but it gets the point across. This guy shoots some nice ones out
Then there's this 5.0 with that 2step limiter.
So how do you install one of these? And what are the good ones to get?

yea a 2 step can cause you to dump fuel. But like i mentioned above you going to damage a cat if you still run it and or O2 sensors. The boss Track key had that ability Supposedly 2014 Mustang Gt 6 speed built after 7/30/13 have a track key being released soon, that will have a 2 step launch ability. otherwise MSD makes a variable 2 step for the Mustangs.
