Question HID Headlight uprading: what is even the deal

Ok SO. Help me out here guys I've got a lot of info that I'm not sure what to do with

I was thinking of swapping these into my Mustang. Since they are "smoked" they will undoubtedly reduce the light output. This needs to be addressed, as the stock halogens are kinda dim anyway

While I'm at it, I'd also like to whiten up the color of the beams and brighten them up as well. Since whitening a halogen light means colored bulbs and therefore filtering the light output, staying halogen would make the lights dimmer still. To correct this I'm thinking HID conversion kit. But this has its own problems.

To my knowledge, quite often putting HID bulbs into halogen buckets creates two problems: overheating (and eventual melting) and an improper light dispersal pattern which is not only dangerous to other drivers, but is illegal in many states. I understand there are two kinds of bulbs: Hi/Lo and Bi-Xenon. I'm not sure how that affects things

TL;DR

HELP

HID isn't as hot, so no burning, even a 55w HID kit is cooler. yes on the beam pattern might be off. HID retrofitting stopped being illegal back in 2003 or 2004.

i know it's not all the info you want need, but it's a start.

I probably wouldn't do HIDs in anything w/out projector headlights, but I have done multiple projector headlight retrofits in the past. at least w/ my luck (GTO, Beetle) the output hasn't been noticeably worse than the stock HIDs in my Mustang.

Something to think about, Joo, there is guy who has done a lot of the retrofitting on here will put halos on stock housings with HIDs. It would probably end up being the same cost as buying those headlights and getting them set up with an HID conversion.

don't put HIDs in housings meant for halogen bulbs. Period.

Oh, thank you for that insightful, well put together and reasonable explanation of your position.

Yep. I've never seen them disperse correctly on mustangs. it blinds the crap out of everyone like you are running your high beams all the time (but brighter). If you want HIDs research retrofiting projectors into your existing housings. Or do what I did and retrofit fords OEM HIDs from an 08 or 09 car.

Look at Retrosolutions.com. I have their 35 watt, 6000K kit with hi and low beams and haven't had a bit of a problem in 100K miles.

don't use smoked lenses in the first place. Or, if you absolutely must, use ones with HIDs and projector lenses which are meant for use with HIDs.
