Break In Period?

RE: Break In Period?
I do not think that Mobile 1 is any better or worse than any other synthetic. The point is that I will cut over to synthetic. I have used Mobile 1 in the past and continue to use it in my other cars. Use whatever you feel comfortable with, but let's leave the "is synthetic better" debate out of this.

Shoot!
Y'all just reminded me that I need to subtract how many miles I had on her before the engine was replaced! It lasted about 3500 miles, but this time I'll do the Mobil one thing at 100 miles. Hope it works...

RE: Break In Period?
Keep in mind this is from a guy with a 2005 GT with a Blower at 600hp plus but the motors still sitting on the floor from a bent junk Ford rod. I don't think there is a break in period. The Pro shop that is building my car has about 10 Cobra CRATE motors with trans and all electronics. I'm told on the ford dyno they were down 10% on HP so their sold off.
I say run it like you are going to drive it. Mines blown up so not sure I would listen to me. I can tell you when its back and ready to go I ask about tuning the dyno and its same day. from 0 hp to 600hp.
Who knew?

RE: Break In Period?
There are basically 2 schools of thought on braking in a new engine. One is to run it easy for the first 3,000 miles and the second is to run it very hard from the start. I think the dealer must say 1,000 because they know your reaction will be [sm=insomnia.gif][sm=forgetit.gif] 3,000 miles! The fact that many of you are replying saying I've driven mine hard for 10,000 miles with no problems doesn't mean anything. The difference in braking an engine in right will not be seen at 10,000 miles. Wait until your at 100,000, 150,000 or even 200,000 miles and look at the condition of the engine, check compression. Plain and simple you have mechanical parts that need to wear together. As painful as it is, I would recommend going at least 1,000 miles easy on it. That is unless you have other plans and would like to be rebuilding it with a forged bottom end and stuff like that. I wouldn't recommend using synthetic oil before the brake in period is completed either. Use a good detergent oil for the brake in and then switch to synthetic. -Joe

RE: Break In Period?
I'm a Redline oil fan synthetic. I'm also a major fan of "Tufoil" found, info at www.tufoil.com
I'm also a beleiver in taking care of my toys.
I talked to Redline, I talked to Tufoil. Redline said to wait till at least 3k miles before running their oil. Tufoil said to wait at least 5k miles before using their additive. Tufoil said that adding a 10% mix of Tufoil in my manual transmission was a good thing.
I broke in my Screaming Yellow GT for 1k miles, mostly gentle with some strong, but never full throttle, application to only 4k RPM's. I added a quart of Redline at 2.5k miles, so, I felt a little better since I had some Redline synthetic in the motor.
At 4.6k I couldn't wait anylonger! Changed out the engine and trans fluids with Redline products and added Tufoil to each! Now with 8k on the engine runs good, I love the sounds and feel of the engine and car!
Lastly, my last car is still around, now used as an around town car. Its an old '78 BMW. 259k on the odo. Custom engine dropped in at 132k. 25 sets of tires have met their maker all together. The machinest that built my engine said "Tufoil" was great stuff. 127k on a four banger engine that needs to be run hard to meet the "fun factor" and runs like a Swiss watch speaks much for Redline and Tufoil.
