Default What is PSI???

WE hear everyone talk psi. Is not psi air that is not going through s/c that is leftover I think a lot emphasis is put on higher ps???? i don't get it when saleem and roush only run 6psi as matter of fact I beleive all s/c comes with anywhere from 5 - 8lbs psi. I read here everybody wants more psi when I think it really is mo necesarry. an engine can only take so much air in a intake stoke and that's it. To get more air you need different cams etc. What do some of you think

PSI

n 1: a unit of pressure [syn: pounds per square inch]

... www.dictionary.com

when you force air into a intake manifold it compresses the airs density closer together, making it take up less space and allowing for more gas into the combustion chambers, with more power as a result. so if you increase the density of the air even more then you can put more pressure into those chambers, but like you said, a block can only take so much. but by reinforcing the block and its internals it can take even more pressure (or PSI as a unit).

PSI is to pressure as Mile is to distance. if that helps.

a engine can take more air in the intake if you compress the air more, idealy its the oxygen thats in the air that you want to force into the combustion chambers.

unless you force the air in under pressure. then the sky is the limit(or the rods...)

My SRT-4 runs at a max of 18 PSI, 15 hold, but that is with stage 1, and an engine that is made for a turbo application.

I think anything over 10 PSI on stock internals on our stangs is just asking for trouble.
