5.4L would probably be the biggest to fit without body modification.

i'm not sure what you mean by fit properlybut heres what i want to see. 06 GT with the cobra v10 with a large whipple charger on it. the cobra v10 was a special engine the guys at team mustang made for a project they were working on. it was based on the truck v10 but had 4V heads and a steel crank etc. they had it in a mustang 99-up. i think it was about 450hp on pump gas N/A.

buy the ford racing 514!! forged internals, 625 HP 600TQ... beast of an engine- and from our tech's on here they say it'll fit.

Tough question, but for me I don't want anything to heavy up front that would mess up the handling. I'd like street version of the 5.0 liter "Cammer" based on the engine in the FR500C. The Ford 5.4 liter SC GT engine would also be nice.

edit: come to think of it, it would also be interesting to drop a really tiny engine in there...like out of a geo or something, and see how far you can push it
