Interesting run against a 2001 "base" LS1 last night
I decide to take the car out for a little spin late last night (driving a 13 year old Buick will do that to you). I'm doing my usual loop down Randall Rd to Rt. 20 East for a few mile blast down the open part of 20. I'm passing Menard's and a familiar pair of head lights come flying up my rear. It's a Camaro, no badges but looks newer, I'm thinking ok, cool, he comes around gives me a thumbs up and just cruises next to me until I get to the exit for Rt. 20. How strange is it that we got all green lights in that section of town... (people who live in this area will understand) so he follows me on the ramp and we line up on Rt. 20 going East, he honks three times and we nail it, I start pulling on him but not very hard, in fact I get maybe a car on him maybe a fender (I wasn't staring afterall) and it stays that way until we hit about 135 and he backs off. We try this 3 times and you'd think we re-wound a tape or somethng as each run goes the same.
He pulls in behind me and I head into the Rt. 25 exit and we head back to Randall (you can loop around), there is a Shell Gas Station there so we pull over and check out each others car. He tells me his Camaro is the base 2001 automatic LS1 and bone stock 310hp with 10,000 miles on it. I explained mine is also bone stock and has about 1,000 miles on it, man his car looked like new! Debadged and painted pitch black, he said he hasn't raced it much but thought for sure he would walk me, since I had no idea if he was Lt1 or LS1 when we went at it I didn't know what to expect but I'm glad I won!
I asked him why he had it out considering he has so few miles on it, he said he just felt like going for a drive, heck that's why I went out! The guy was old school, race a few times on an open road no traffic and pull over to talk no bull and no excuses. He says he has no plans to change anything on his ride, can't blame him, everything looked like new.
Just thought I would share, last night was a good night.
