RE: new shift ball....boot problems
I installed a UPR pistal grip billet on a pro 5.0 shifter. I used two 5/8ths chrome flat washers. One under the boot and one between the boot and ****. Looks great and the boot doesn't go limp.

Well, on the pro 5.0 shifter there is a shoulder at the bottom of the threads that doesn't allow the washer to go down the shifter shaft. Don't remember on the factory shifter if this is the same. If not, use a metric half nut and screw that to the bottom of the threads to hold the first washer, but the boot on, add the second washer and then the ****. You are basically sandwiching the boot between the washers to hold it in place. Hope that clarifies!

it was gorgeous before I dropped it in the drive way and it bounced 4x before I picked it up
the scratches are small no one else will notice but I will everytime I look at it...so....I'll replace it soon. only 50 bucks or so.

Are you looking to do something like this? This is on a B&M shifter, which is similar to the stock one.
I bought several shaft spacers, 1/2 diameter in varying lengths.
2 washers - 1 is a 1/2" inside diameter, same width as the top of the boot ring. The 2nd is the same outer dia. but only 1/4" opening. I chose this because this washer is thinner, and will look better on top of the boot. You will need to drill out the washer to the size of the shaft.
Next, I purchased nylon spacers to go between the boot at the ****. Again in different sizes to make sure everything lines up correctly.
I could not find black spacers, or washers - I just painted them
You should be able to find these at Home Depot or OSH
The install order is as follows:
1. Shaft spacer on the shifter.
2. 1/2" fender washer
3. Boot
4. Spacer nut, or washers to fill the gap inside the upper boot ring.
5. 1/4" fender washer
6. Nylon spacer
7. Shifter ****

Just what I have been looking for. I just purchased a Hurst white ball shifter for my stock shifter in order to get rid of the rather phallic shaped **** Ford enineering came up with. THGe designer clearly had high levels of estrogen whether the engineer be a she or a he. Your input to this same delimma has been very helpful.
To give back to this thread for those looking to buy a ball shift **** locally and install it, know that when installing on your stock shift handle that Ford threaded the stock shift lever12mm 1.25mm pitch which is a fine thread pitch. If you purchase the hurst shifter ballthreaded 12mm 1.75 pitch or 3/8 x 16 thread, drill out 10.8mm and tap to 12mmX1.25fp. All done. Just remember that 12mm 1.25fp is a fine thread tap and may not be in a standard metric tap set.
One day next spring if the money gods are nice to me after tax season, I will obtain an MGW or Tri-ax formy late model and get it done for more than just looks.
