You know everyone talks about WRX, EVO, lol, until I did a search. I thought EVO was a subaru too.........check this web link out ....what the hell... a mitsubishi nut bucket.....sure I built with all the options..you have to be kidding...and I pass these daily driving to work, and thought were $14,000 throw away cars?....update...seems link just takes to mitsubishi site...build the lancer evolution with all packages...$44,000 you have to be kidding.......watched the top gear guys few minutes ago testing both wrx and evo....jesus that EVO sort of impressive...they took a turn that ferrari & a lambo could only handle at 65...the evo...over 100. guess is a little beast.

Not to get off on a tagent, but Mitsubishi did 2 things right:
1) The 3000GT VR4: twin turbo V6, 100% AWD, and the motor and drivetrain were good, STOCK, for over 500whp. This is early 90s folks, so think about the Mustang GT of the same era.
2) The EVO. Another car that in stock form can support, safely, large ammounts of power and has a stout drivetrain (AWD again) to put it to good use.
Along with the EVO is the present day Ralliart which is quite a bargain: it has the same motor as the EVO (smaller turbo and intake manifold ONLY), and it has the EVO's spectacular AWD drivetrain. You can pick up a one or two year old Ralliart for under 20k, and invest about $2k in it and have a hell of a great car... twin clutch auto and paddle shifters.... 3 differentials... the front and rear are LSD's and the center diff has selectabe modes for different driving surfaces, and the transmission has different modes for the type of driving you're doing.
Everything else from Mitsu kind of sucks.
Back to the Op's dilema... I'd buy a BASE 2011 Mustang GT, and then pick up a $2k winter beater!!!! There's a lot to be said for the Mustang, and the GT is a beast, and its cheap when you get it with no options on it. Not only is it better looking than everything else he is considering, but its faster as well and far more potential to be even faster.
The Mustang is a car that if you hang onto it for 10 years and keep it in good condition you'll never be ashamed to be seen in. Can't really say the same about the WRX, even though I own one.
I knew someone who drove a GT all year long, in Michigan, which gets a lot of snow. A great set of proper winter snow/ice tires, and a bunch of weight in the trunk, and you *should* be fine. Hell, look at all the RWD cop cars in the snow belt.

The only weak link in those cars were the outputshafts and synchros.
Before I got out of the perfomance business we built a monster 99 VR-4 with 19t turbos, meth injection, aem ems etc. That setup can easily hit 575hp and the engine will handle it.
