Manual shift for auto transmission

Manual shift for auto transmission
I am a bit disappointed that the new auto transmission did not come with a manual mode (as in -/+ shifter). I've driven a few of these recently (Subaru outback, Mazda6) and it is nice to have that capability here and there where you want to force the transmission to downshift or stay longer at high rpms.
I've tried doing the same with the existing shifter, and it sort of works but it feels a little sluggish (plus you have control only on the first 3 gears). Am not looking for steering wheel paddle shifters, and please save the comments about going to the manual transmission - I like the auto (especially in daily commute) and only occasionally would like to have more control on when the gear shifts happen . I read about these ratchet shifters, but it seem to be their operation is not as smooth/easy as a -/+ one (I may be wrong, feel free to share your experiences). Any other solutions out there?
Thanks

Interesting, I posted this thread almost a year ago, it seems Ford have added this manual shift capability in the 2013 model - http://mustangsdaily.com/blog/2012/0...h-selectshift/
I am wondering if this will be available as an upgrade for 2011-2012 six speed automatic ...

I have heard a company is looking to market an upgrade kit for the 2011+ cars - it's on my hit list as well. There were some posts around here on it, will see if I can dig it up and paste a link to something more recent on this.

As far as I figure out from the information on the web, the ratchet shifter allows you to shift the same gears as the original shifter, i.e. 1-2-3-D. So it does not let you really get manual control over all gears

The TCI shifter will only help with shift accuracy (as auto shifters are slippery and sometimes you skip a gear using them) by making you row it each time you want to change to a higher gear. Moreover, it will lock you out of neutral/reverse/park when you are shifting, unless you have the upper handle depressed as well.
As far as giving you direct 1-2-3-4-5 control over all gears, no sorry man, I don't think any company has come up with that for the S197s yet.
And I agree with you OP, I have friends with old camrys and subarus that have the manumatic shifter. This addition is embarrassingly overdue by Ford.
