Default 3.31 purchasing options

So, toying with my options to get 3.31 gears purchased to replace the factory 2.73s. I've seen Chris from AM state many times that the only gears that won't make a whirring sound are Ford's Racing gears. Interestingly enough, I noticed AM's lineup only has the 3.55 and 3.73, both of which are too steep for what I want. Checked with the dealer, and they'd sell a 3.31 for $400 w/o install. (compared to $150 for the FR gears on AM's site). So my question is, for those who have purchased FR's 3.31's, where did you go to get them?

Ford Racing doesn't make a 3.31 ring and pinion gear change set. They do make a 3.27 - which is very close to the stock 3.31. It sells for $179 at

Ah... well that would explain why I can't find them. So buying a 3.31 from the Ford parts department would be the only way to get them I suppose. Hmm...

Best bet would be to grab the gear from someone who recently made the upgrade from a 3.31 to another gear. I sold mine for $100 shipped with the pinion bearing still installed. Pinion bearing will cost you $45.00 alone.

regalt87 is selling a 3.31 gear for $55.00 on www.v6mustangperformance.com.

Thanks Alan, I will weigh them tomorrow and find a shipper. I actually have 2 sets each with very low miles.

Hi Regalt87, I sent you my address to your email account so that we could get a more accurate cost on the shipping. Thanks.

That would be to me, thanks again. I'm having the 3.31s along with an aluminum driveshaft installed tomorrow.

That 3.7L performance site looks pretty nice, thanks for the link!

Thumbs up

Got the car back today, and definitely prefer the higher gear ratio. Traffic at the moment sucks so I'll take it for test drive in a couple of hours. Jerry the owner at Oceanside Driveline had this comment, "the car shifts smoothly, drives & sounds like a BMW, but is a lot cheaper. Nice car!"

From what I can tell, they've done a fine job. The car runs quiet & smooth. I'd definitely recommend Oceanside Driveline.

It hasn't been long since I did the gear change but my initial impression is the car should have come standard w/ 3.31 gears. The gears are too tall with 2.73s. The only negative I've noticed is the shifter vibration from the dual mass flywheel during deceleration seems to have slightly increased in intensity with the larger gear ratio. My guess is that is a normal characteristic of increasing gear ratio with this car.
