It hasn't been long since I did the gear change but my initial impression is the car should have come standard w/ 3.31 gears. The gears are too tall with 2.73s. The only negative I've noticed is the shifter vibration from the dual mass flywheel during deceleration seems to have slightly increased in intensity with the larger gear ratio. My guess is that is a normal characteristic of increasing gear ratio with this car.
I picked up the 3.31 takeoffs that Regal87 was selling (thanks WRXified), and am anxious to get it put on. Funny when I look back. I test drove various (every possible configuration) 2011 v6 mustangs at least 10 times before I bought. I remember thinking (and stating on the forums) that the 2.73 was not only fine, but felt it was easier to drive, etc. It is ultimately why I chose the car I bought. Well, after several thousand miles in the seat, I have to say that I was wrong. It's just too tall with the 2.73. Aside from the whole acceleration issue, what I've observed is that while it might deliver better mpgs under the perfect/ideal conditions, the margine of error for doing so is tiny (slight grade, or slight speed increase really hurts it because its running so low on the power band). Oh well, lesson learned. It cost me a few hundred bucks to figure that out. :-)
