Default Goes into "safe mode" when snow falls from the sky

I know it sounds weird but this only happens when snow is falling from the sky. it was snowing on the way to work today, and this happened, but when i was coming home, it wasn't snowing and everything went fine, eventhough there was still some snow on the streets.

I have a 2007 mustang, v6, no mods. i've been keeping up with scheduled maintenance like oil changes regularly and normally it runs just fine, except when it snows. I live in WI. this has happened the last two times it snowed when i was driving.

i'm driving on the highway and snow is falling from the sky. for a while it drives fine, but then occasionally it feels like the engine is misfiring or something, like a jerk, and then its fine for a couple miles, but then it will do it again. after a number of times of jerking, it will kick into "safe mode". it kills my cruise control and i have very little power (for like accelerating) and a wrench becomes illuminated on my dash.

this happened today, so i limped it to the advanced auto parts and had them pull the obdii code off it, which was: p061b

i did some searching and it sounds like the most common culprit would be something to do with the TPS or MAF. I'm not really a "car guy" but i can make do if i have some instructions to follow. Is there something that i could try to do at home or should i just suck it up and take it to the dealer and tell them what i've told you and point them in the direction of the TPS/MAF?

lastly, should i not drive my car until it is fixed? like i said, this problem only has occured when snow is falling from the sky, so as long as its not snowing, my car should be ok right?

This might be caused by a leak, check out this link:

Hope you did not need to drive today!

Btw, welcome to the forum, where in WI are you?

i came across this article (http://www.justanswer.com/ford/4jeg1...ternative.html) that seemed to sound like my situation, so i went and took a peek at the air filter and noticed that the top of the housing was not completely latched, so i'm thinking maybe that was it? the air filter looked fine, so i latched it up tight and have got my fingers crossed that fixes the problem, but i'm still open to hearing ideas of things i can try at home (i figure it would be things that would be good to do anyway...)

Do you have TCS? And you are driving with cruise control on while it is snowing? If so then part of what you feel could simply be the TCS taking charge when there is a slip -

I've never thought it a great idea to use cruise control while it is snowing (or raining) since if there is a tire slip due to the weather conditions the cruise control won't lift the accelerator and just keeps powering on.

It used to say don't use it in those conditions in the owners manual (never checked it on this car and just stayed with the way I've always done it).

John, I'm about 45 minutes NW of Milwaukee. Let us know if this cured the problem.
