Have 40,000 miles on my 2012 V6. Front discs have started to shutter on hard braking and on long downhills. Don't know if they resurface discs anymore. One place said no, haven't gone to other "brake muffler and tire" places nearby. Wonder if I should get aftermarket discs and pads now. What brand is decent but not super expensive?

 

Not worth resurfacing for the time, effort, and cost these days. By the time they shave off what is needed to get the discs trued again, the now thinner disc will be more prone to warp again in a shorter amount of time, especially in hilly areas.

Just buy new ones and replace them.

 

 

40,000 is a little soon for brake discs to go bad though, unless they were already
cheap china rotors. I got slotted and drilled for my '15 TSI, they lasted 30,000 miles,
but I go up over the mountains on US 322, 4-days a week. Still, the OEM ones lasted
much much longer. I just put OE back on, and since the pads were still very good,
I pull the bracket bolts, and remove the whole thing at once, put the rotor on, then
put the brake assembly back on. 25 minutes total time for both sides, and all I
used was an electric impact for the lugs. Got back with the rotors from Auto
Zone at 4PM, was done at 4:25 PM. Been doing this stuff a LONG LONG time....

 

3 months after my ordered 2011 v6 arrived, in August 2010 (with around 1200 miles) I got ran off the road by a local police car. I warped one or maybe both of my front rotors. 8 years later and 30,200 miles, they are still warped, only noticeable when braking at higher speeds. I'm going to replace the pads and rotors 'maybe' next summer

 

Being run off the road did not warp your rotors... I have had to stab and STAY on my brakes plenty
of times, and nothing warped. My OEs were not warped, I just wanted slotted and drilled rotor. I
should have kept the OEs I took off, I would have just reused them. No, brake riding is what warps
rotors, and you do a lot of that going down the mountain side. Trans braking doesn't work with
this TSI, the RPMs just continue to climb, even in 3rd gear. If it hits the rev limiter, it will shift
UP on its own. SO, you're braking all the way down the mountain, and THAT warps rotors.

If you were ran off the road, and had to jam on the brakes, that one time won't warp the rotors.
I would check suspension for wobbling at higher speed braking. I have run my '08 for 10,000+
miles, and ran my route up and down the same mountain, and the rotors are fine. So, yours
warping after one incident at 1200 miles, I would have gone to the dealer and told them
something's up here. It's only got 1200 miles and the wheel wobbles when I brake at higher
speeds. Let them deal with it, because that's premature in my book. I know what PA
driving does to brakes, and my '08s are fine in 10,000+ miles doing that same run up and
down that mountain. Yours was way premature, and should have been covered under the
warranty.
