ford 351 changeout ???
just bought a 1984 ford f-250 truck and was wondering if the motor could be swapped into a 1995 ford mustang gt. the truck has a 351 windsor in it.
any input would be greatly appreciated.
thank you

how much work would it be. i have my mustang in the garage and i just got the motor out and i was going to buy a 345 hp motor from jegs, but now i got the truck for a 100 bucks and the motor only has 80.000 on it. what would you suggest?
Look at the oil pan on the truck motor. If it has the double hump pan then you could just get yourself some headers and put it in. I dont know what trans you have, auto or stick.
If you have to buy a flywheel or flex plate then it will have to be a 28 oz. as well as 157 tooth count to work in your car with your trans.Dont worry either as they are all over the place.
One thing i might have overlooked. 84' was still carbed so you have a choice, put it in and get it running with the carb. Or you will have to buy(as well) an efi 351 intake and a distributer from a 90's efi truck.

Since this is brought up once a week, and we're all trying to do the same thing, heaven help us all, I thought I'd drop this post into this thread.
I have a question: the firing order on a 351W is different (1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8) than a 302 (1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8). If you want to be carbureted, all you have to do is swap the wires on the cap and voila!
HOWEVER, if you want to keep your sequential EFI setup, like this gentleman is talking about with the Typhoon (good choice by the way [sm=smiley20.gif], how does one match up the firing order to the injection pulse? You can still swap the firing order on the cap, and it will run, but it won't make NEARLY as much power as it could/should. It's not hard to figure out why.
The fix, obviously, is a different ECM, right? I'm SURE there's a conversion kit/package out there, isn't there? OR...what OEM ECM's would be compatible with the EEC-IV that 94-95 SN95's run? OR can you reprogram the existing computer to pulse the injectors in the right order?
THAT'S what a brother needs to know, 'cause I'm thinking of the same dang swap, but I want to iron out the sequential fuel injection issue before I put both feet in, because I want the drivability/tunability/power-making ability of EFI.
SOMEBODY'S got to be all over that, because it's just too easy otherwise - all those cubes, longer stroke, torque, thicker block webbings, stronger all around rotating assembly (on and on it goes!) and all you REALLY need is a wider lower intake, different headers (maybe) a new oil pan, new accessory bracket...
The 351w is a drop in swap. They all have 28 oz balancers and flywheels. If you want a manual trans you will have to buy the correct flywheel. I don't think the truck manual flywheel will work in a mustang. The front brackets will all bolt up. You may have to clearance the passenger side valve cover or clearance the alternator to fit. You will need swap headers and a few other minor items.

it seems as though the 82 and later 302 HO engines have the same firing order as the 351W (1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8). I am verifying this, and if it's true (and I think it is), then EFI is not an issue. I'll check back later.
