5.8 vs vette?
when i get the 351w mustang is it gonna be able to hang with vettes, and since the answer is probably not what do i need to do to help get it there?

Kind of a vague question there buddy. What year Vette's? Stock or modded? Is your 351 stock or modded? Way too many varibles to actually answer your question. Lets' say that there are ones out there you beat and ones you will not.

stock for stock. what years can i take and what do i stay away from?
my setup will eventually include a weinand single plane intake with a holley 4bbl DP carb, and magna flow exhaust. its also an auto.

ok, so what can a stock 351 take. once i get this damn car i wont be able to do really big upgrades for a while. carbs, cam, and exhaust will be about it.

Stock head are a big restriction on 351, BIG heads and proper cam are going
to be must for you to ge the power you want.
Stock 351 only makes about 260hp, swap the right heads and cam on there and you're up in the 400's easy.
As for beating vets ...............
It depends on how heavily mod'd the vet is.
I can whoop some LS1 ***, but I've also been spanked pretty hard by some LS1's
If you build your 351 right you can take stock LS1's, hang with litely mod'd LS1's but
if they've dumped some serious bucks into a head, cam and intake swap those LS1's are NASTY!
to be must for you to ge the power you want.
