Piston Cam question for a 408
My buddy has a 408 stroker motor with 69 windsor block AFR 205 heads 58cc with quick fuel 750 carb. Recenly tore motor down saw he had 2 pistons that has chunks out of them car originaly had around 10.5.1 compression and 548 550 lift cam with 1.6 rockers he is wanting to up the compression to 11.5.1 or.12.5.1 and run a bigger cam around 600 to 620 lift he wants JE pistons does anyone know what pistons and cam would be a good combo for this application he is wanting. Car is basically going to be set up for race and he is going to get a converter built around what the motor is thanks

RE: Piston Cam question for a 408
First thing i am seeing is he only had a 750 carb on it? Fords can take ALOT of gas and like it. My bud with a windsor with stock bottom end and aluminum heads has a 750cfm on it and when he put my 950 onhis motorhe found some power. I have a 408 good till 7500 rpms and I am sure I could have and probably should have put a 1050 on it. I know leaner is meaner but ya starting going to lean its gonna run real hot in the combustion chamber.
JE and SRP pistons are good I have SRP with the doug herbert solid roller 644. 643 lift
Also once you top 11 to 1 compression your into race gas so if he is gonna do that he might as well pick what kind of race gas he wants to run, 106 unleaded or 113 leaded and figure out what compression you can max those gases out with and do that. No sense paying for 106 race gas if all ya need is 98 octane. Unless he is gonna run 100 LL airplane gas but then ya gotta go gas up at local airports.

RE: Piston Cam question for a 408
well the best pass he had to date 10.94@126. so you think a 950 would make much more of a difference with what the combo is now? basically he had the edge of two pistons break off the top of the piston above the ring..so i assume the ring gap was too close and when it got hot the rings expanded to cause that...we had heard that the JE pistons werent really good for compession, i dont know ...he didnt know what piston everyone else has had good luck with...thanks
