i would lean more up wards of 0.650,0.700 and you would want to go with a 1.7 rocker
but i high recommend a custom cam its highly worth them and a refresh would be 0.010 the 0.030 is more less adding cubs. if you want street wise i recommend a afr 185, and for cam trick flow stage 2 would be very streetable and give you a good street/stip car.
hope this helps u

p.s. elec water pumps are alright i dont use them i was think of using one on my build im doing now

Humor me here, is 400 HP to the tires in the ball park of 500 at the flywheel? I know what i built to attain that on 351 cubes and it is vary narly. Idles with a heavy thump and has manual brakes because of such low engine vacumn. Now this engine is naturally aspirated and given my experience 351 inches or less to make 400 to the rear wheels on engine is not tame by any means.

Therefore, going naturally aspirated I would go for the cubes(408) and the engine would still have a heavy thump but still be a great driver. Power adder?? Now that can be an equalizer on a smaller inch displacement.

wildcobrar i dont understand what you are trying to say. Are saying that it is not only very much hard work to just obtain 500 horsepower at the FLYWHEEL, but it is also dangerous and unpractical? What do you mean by "not tame"? I dont know if your talking about your personal naturally aspirated 408W engine.

BUT if you read in this months "Engine Master" magazine COVER story, they cover a 351W making 536 HP on pump gas. not only did they keep the STOCK crank, but they also bored the engine to a 4.030 bore with a 3.500 inches of stroke, making it now a 358W. Using AFR 205cc cylinder heads with 1.6 rocker ratio and at 10:48:1 compression. also using a holley carb. making 455hp/488tq at 4,900 RPM. and 536hp/433tq at 6500 WITH a FLAT TAPPED CAM.

narly? i think so

yeah and if u wanted to make more swap to a solid cam and vic jr and u would pick up another 25-50 hp.

but none the less a very solid motor and with a stick behind it it would make 440-460 rwhp and pump gas. but that motor is still a little pricey 6-8000 bucks

No no, nat dangerous or unpractical. Just not well mannered drivability wise. It does not have enough goods for power brakes bieng applied within short intervals of each other. The idle is quite wild and the power is up in the higher rpm region. Don't get me wrong, I like what I built. But most people would not like the harshness that comes with smaller cubes and that kind of power. Mine is 351 stock crank and rods. Now a 408 with that same power and you have something that goes like it is possessed and still have that good old tame driving qualities like a stock 5.0. Maybe this engine masters 351 is like that. I don't know. But I do know what my engine is like. And I know what kind of power it makes.

5-8000 grand including machine work and no not everything for a complete motor is listed oil pump, oil pan , pickup, distributor, plugs, flywheel or flexplate,r. rockers, pushrods, valve covers, and probably more

why not for the same price or alittle more a 408,418, or 427 and make more power for a few bucks more?

I dont want to hijack this thread - but if that last question was for me... I simply do not need more than 530Hp. Also, I would only be comfortable with a 30 over bore. Anything larger, although you can make them last forever, just scares the crap out of me. I cant see putting that kind of money in to something when it is pushing the limits of the block. Just my opinion.

^^^^ 530 hp is not pushing the limits at all on a 351 windsor

and going to the bigger cubic inch windsors does not require bigger overbore the cubes come from different crank, rod and piston combos
