they will both give you worse gas mileage. I belive that the stock differential is 3.55 for an auto. I could be wrong though, but I think that is what it is. anyway 4.10 is gona give you the worst of the two. I personally would go with 3.73... that is what i plan to go with, but its up to you 4.10 will accelerate a little faster, but give you worse top end and worse gas mileage, to me 3.73 seems like a good compramise, but all the guys on here with 4.10 seem to love it, but they also all have pics of them on the dragstrip too if you get what I am saying.
+1

If you plan on going to drag pretty frequent then 4.10 all the way. But if its your Daily Driver and just take it to the strip everynow and then 3.73

I asked that and i have an auto. They told me drive for a week with your overdrive off. If your fine with it then get 4.10 other 3.73 is still a great upgrade to get. When i get gears thats what i'm gonna get.
thats not even close with OD off and a 27" tall tire you will be turning 4000 rpms at 80 mph while with 4.10s in overdrive and a 27" tall tire you should be turning about 3k
right... the idea is if you can survive without OD then you can survive 4:10s since 4:10's are not as bad as losing your OD...

80 MPH in OD with the stock gearing is about 2350 RPM...

with 3.73 it's 2650...

with 4.10 it's 2900...

but you would be turning an additional 1000 rpms with it off, so if you can survie with out OD, go 4.56s

so 4:10 will be better for mileage COMPARED to the 3:73? so 3:73 helps more with speed? correct? this is too hard of a decision for me lol! what will the 3:73's do to my mileage compared to stock?
provided you dont get leadititus 1 mpg drop for 3.73s, 2-3 mpg drop for 4.10s

all stock 6ers have 3.31s

I think we have 3.23 gears dont we? If im wrong either way gears in general whether 3.73 or 4.10 are still a good improvement right? Just on the basis of normal driving i'd probably go with the 3.73 i think.

3.31s 5 speed GTs have 3.55s standard unless its an 07 then its optional and 3.31s are stock

they are a good improvement, but i would just let the motor turn the extra 200 rpms and loose teh additional 1.5 mpg

I was pretty sure that there was a difference between the manuals and the autos. I thought the autos came with 3.55s and the manuals came with 3.31s?

I'm a newbie to modding my Mustang and I'm totally confused. What exactly does different gearing do? Everybody seems to be worried about MPG. Does it make you accelerate faster? Any help you could give me would be appreciated. Thanks.

you accelerate faster but it takes higher rpms to get to the same speed. Higher rpm = less mpg
