What was the finally decision on this? does it damage the transmission? my friend has an ol fox and said you need a shift kit to do that without hurting it.

ya i shift like that except i never used o/d (i wanna hear the engine duhhhh) then my dad told me to stop it because of the bands in the transmission can snap (which makes the car jolt) and can screw it up bad (i still do it occasionly, like if i race someone haha)

It doesnt do anything bad for our auto trans. I do it all the time, although depending i dont know for sure but maybe if you miss shifts and just redline for a bit it might hurt it?

just remember the car's computer controls the shifts. so when you downshift or something like that, that input goes to the computer, the computer decides if its safe to shift or not.

AFAIK when you shift in our autos it basically just tells the TCU you want to shift into X gear then the transmission waits until it is safe to do so. Meaning if you are going 80 MPH at 3kRPM and try to downshift straight to 2nd it will do nothing until you slow down.

A buddy of mine is a tranny specialist at a local shop. I stopped by and asked him this today, and this is what he said...

"Don't hand shift a modern auto. There's simply no point to it. The way the Mustang's works is whatever gear your selector is in is the top end of what your box is limited to. So, if your in 2nd, the tranny can still run from 1st to 2nd, just not to third or above. So, you're not really controlling the shifting - unless you're in a low gear and bring the RPMs up, then shift up and force the shift. Which I still wouldn't recommend as normal driving practice as you are more likely to over rev the motor or exceed the amount of torque placed on the gearbox during the shift. Instead of hand shifting, get a custom tuner and reprogram the RPM and load ranges for each of the shift points."
