Default Axle? Brake? freezing up...

Hey folks, been a while since I last posted here, but lately I've been having a problem I can't figure out. Here in Chicago, we've had a pretty cold last week or so. A couple of mornings this week, I've gone out and started up the car, and after letting it warm up for a few minutes, put it in reverse, and it doesn't move. The engine revs; it's fully in gear; you can even feel the torque going to the wheels. It just doesn't move. So, after I kind of shook it loose trying to move in first, and then trying in revers a couple of times, the car starts moving. But from there, to go forward for instance, you have to keep your foot on the gas, and keep the car in first gear until you're up to around 5500 rpm (think: driving a truck in 4-low). To top it off, once I manage to start moving, I think I smell something burning - grease maybe. Anyone have any idea what the heck this problem might be? I'm taking it to the shop tomorrow...this can't go on, but I was wondering if anyone else had this, and what it was. I know Canadians have seen cold worse than this!

Thanks!

I'm assuming the car is a 2005 or newer? So it's under warranty? Call the dealer, have it towed and let them worry about whats wrong with it.

Yeah, it's an '05 still under warranty (in fact, if it's a rear axle problem, that was replaced prior to a reacquisition by Ford, so it has an additional warranty). I'm going to the dealer tomorrow since I'm off work, but I was just wondering if anyone had similar problems - you know, if Ford uses crappy fluids that can't handle cold or something...
