Default "Popping" from Factory Muffler

Just got an '08 about 2 months ago. I have less than 2K miles on it at this point.

Within the past few weeks, I've noticed that when the RPMs run high, then back off, the factory muffler gives a "popping" noise.

I used to have a cheap Thrush muffler on an old car that sounded the same way, but it was supposed to on that one, because it was a cheap glasspack.

However, I don't want my muffler to sound that way on my Mustang. Here's my question: Has anyone else experienced this? Is this how the factory mufflers are, and I'll just need to buy a better one if I don't want that noise? Or am I alone here, and should follow up with the dealership?

Thanks for you time guys.

The factory mufflers are very quiet. I never noticed any popping noise with mine.

you might have this happen when its in open loop still. before the motor is warmed up.

+1, My GT does it very badly for about 1-3 minutes when you first start it up.

Funny you guys should say that. I forgot to mention in the original post, but it does seem worse when first started up and the engine is cold.

I have some knowledge of cars, but not vast. I;m not sure what you mean when you say "open loop". Is itsomething that I should have looked at?

haha no its pretty much normal. when your car first starts up it runs in "open loop" which means its not working off all engine sensors. After it gets proper o2 and temp readings it goes into closed loop and your a/f ratio becomes normal and what not.

At this point, I have no choice but to take your word for it. :-)

I appreciate your time. Thanks.

Oh, I remember that! It was so annoying, I couldn't stand it. My new mufflers do it up when they are warm...it sucks. OH WELL, just take easy for the first 5 minutes of driving then start going in high rpms.

Its normal. It happens when the engine is cold and in open loop fuel mode.
The engine is running rich while the loop is running open.
It disappears when the engine management system goes into closed loop mode.
