Depends on his insurance company. Most will pay out whatever the cheapest price is at a collision repair facility. This may include new and/or new take off replacement parts. Other companies may assess the damage and just cut a check.

Im just going to guess but I'd say they'll probably give him $200-250 for the bumper and grille + paint and $50 or so for the headlight.

His best bet would be to let the adjuster look at it, assign a value, and then ask for a check.

If he can get that then he can buy a prepainted/take off GT bumper for $150-200, grilles starting around $50-75, and replacement headlights starting at ~$50.

If needed he could try to convince the adjuster to cut a check by saying he would take the amount for parts only (since new take off parts should be prepainted) and they wouldn't have to pay out as much.

If they want to replace it with new parts from the dealership, it's going to be a lot more expensive than $200-300 + paint.

Is that after his $500 deductible? Because if he payed out $500 and got like 300 back that's a waste. Couldn't he tell insurance not to pay for it?

What are you trying to do? This question doesn't make a lot of sense to me. If you don't want the insurance to pay, why turn it in to the insurance company for a claim?

When my car was rear ended I didn't turn it in for a claim - just took care of it myself because I could do it for less than my deductible and the guy who hit me offered to pay as well out of his pocket to keep it off his insurance.

If he rearended someone then it is on his own insurance not the other person. He is at fault. Does he carry liability only because if that is the case he gets nothing.

If payign to repair the damage is the same or less than your deductible, insurance isn't going to cover it.

So if damages are $450 and deductible is $500, he's paying the $450 and insurance won't get involved.

How bad is the damage on the car he rear ended? He's going to have to pay that too. Sounds a little rougher than a fender bender if the headlight and grille is broke.

I bought a prepainted take off GT bumper, grill with the GT lights for right at $400. If he has a $500 deductable then I wouldn't even call the insurance company for a claim. He would also need to check for any other damage to the vehicle that may not be seen. Now if he wants to make a claim, then he needs to go to 3 of the best shops in town and get an estimate from all 3 so when he speaks to his adjuster, he'll have something to bargain with.
