Unhappy Engine Problem, Any idea?

hey guys/ ive been browsing here a bit, finally registered. And of course same time I need a helping hand. My oil dropped while someone else had my car and I forgot all about it, I was driving down the road and got this steady ticking noise, got an oil change IMMEDIATLY. Ticking continued, but not as loud. Had a buddy have a look, he said from the noise it sounds like the rocker arm or a collapsed lifter, car still running fine. (Besides noise) so im driving home from work, Engine goes dead quiet don't even sound like its running.. I realise my rpms are absoloutly struggling to raise, and I know if I stop its gonna shut off so I try to keep it rolling, got to a red light.. sputterd and stalled, turned the key she started and went again still struggling, stalled again (automatic transmission btw) tried to turn it over again, no go. Crank no fire. Any ideas boys? There goes the paycheck I assume, hopefully all hope isn't lost..

Sounds like your engine has officially gone kaput, if your oil level was at an unsafe level it's probably safe to say that at some point some of the components were starved for oil. If it's fried, fortunately the 4.0l is a relatively cheap motor, I sold my whole assembly plus tranny and rear end with the ECU for $850.

Shouldn't be the whole engine, my power would've dropped before wouldn't it? it seems camshaft related.

It's probably valve train related, but the 4.0's aren't worth the time to do any major repair work. As the engines have become dirt cheap. You still want to properly diagnose your problem, but if it is extensive to repair it would be simpler and wiser to replace the motor itself.

I see what your saying, whats the chances of it being something medium-ranged.

Easiest thing to do is pull the valve covers it takes about a hour to do and check york cams and timing chains one on the back of the engine and the other is on the front
