Default Auto transmission shifter problem

Ok i have a 2007 auto 4.0 this is the second time the rubber piece at the base of the t handle has broken. No problem from first experience i learned how to remove center console and take shifter cover off to repair piece of rubber. This time same thing sorry rubber broke off just above where I had repaired it last time. The bad thing is now I can not get the shifter to lock into Park. Not sure what is wrong. The plastic rod with the spring on it came out of the base of the shifter. I put back in and turned into place. Seems to be ok but when I put t handle back together the button on side of t handle is not locking in park like it should when moved all the way into park. Shifter will go through all the gears ok but just does not lock when in park. Only way to get key out is to disconnect battery. Any ideas before i go spend a couple of hundred dollars on complete new shifter.

On the passenger-side of the shifter top, there is a little oval-shape plastic cover. Remove it, and use a small flathead screwdriver to release the locking mechanism; that will at least allow you to get it into park all the way.

My factory shifter messed up like that, but was under warranty and was replaced by the dealer.

Thanks figured it out and finally fixed it this morning. Warning if you ever have to take T-Handle apart to repair rubber slider be very careful not to dislodge spring loaded plastic rod in center of shifter base (it looks like a triangle on its side it is what operates the interlock between your push button on T-Handle) it is a bear to reconnect especially if your eyesight is not as good as it once was! LOL.

Hi tkbd6;

What magic did you use to get the plastic rod down into the base of shifter and turned to the correct position (slope towards steering wheel I believe)? I have been trying for about an hour. I can get the plastic rod all the way down but cannot rotate. Please share your process on how you did this.

Thanks!

Thanks I also found out you can disconnect your battery to free up your key.

No magic just lucky I think. You are correct about the position of plastic rod. It is suppose to be connected to a little aluminum bar at the bottom of the shifter base. I got an extra set of eyes and hands (my wife) to help hold a light and turn the rod while i got on the passenger floorboard and held the little bar with a pair of needlenose pliers. If you look down into the base you will see a little slot that the plastic rod hooks through. The rod has two little **** toward the bottom, rotate the rod 90 degrees so the hook can go all the way down throught the little bar I dont remember if It was clockwise or counter clockwise just keep trying. The spring will hold the bar in place once it is secured by the hook on the bottom of the rod. Good luck hope you have it back together already.
