Installing Gears
I know, I know.... Another gear question, ehy don't these guys go somewhere else with this crap. I apoligize ahead of time for the post. But anyway, I am wondering how hard it is to replace the rear end gears on my stang. Everyone around here has their opinion on what gears I shoudl get, but anyway everyone is always talking about taking them somewhere to get them installed. I am not a big fan of paying a shop ridiculous amounts of money to install my ****. I learned this when I was 16 and bought lowering springs for my v6 stang i used to have, the shop wanted $200 to install them (sheapest price I could find anywhere). I decided I didn't want to pay more to install the springs than I paid for the springs. So I went to autozone, borowed a spring compressor and did the work myself. But anyway, from then on I refused to have a shop do it cuz I thought I could figure it out. Back on topis now... I know everyone talks about getting the installation kit with the new bearings, how hard are the gears to install, do I need any special tools, is it recommended that I do it myself, or could I really scrwew something up by doing it. It doesn't seem like it would be that hard, I have done plenty of work on cars and motorcycles, I have just never messed with the rear end of a car, that's why I need the help. I don't think I would have any problem doing it myself, just some tips and pointers ahead of time would be nice. Thanks again for all the help ahead of time.
i think you pretty much already answered your own question... you have no experience with gears (which are a much bigger undertaking than springs) so i think you are better off having a shop do it for you.
no reason to mess up your rear end (no hidden meaning, i swear) because you are trying to 'outwit' car shops.

I would say definantly take it to a shop. If you mess up the shims you will get massive gear whine and ultimatley could mess up the rear end big time. It takes a lot of time and accuracy to get this to work.
