First off, if you dont know what you are doing with timing, dont play with it. You can EASILY grenade your block by playing with the timing.

With that said...

With ANY timing advance you MUST up your octane in your fuel If you have premium fuel, its better to use that to prevent against pinging and detonation.

My suggestion to you would be to get a programmer (SCT or Diablo) to have your timing advanced via your ECU. Since your tuner can adjust your a/f ratio and adjust your timing corresponding to what octane fuel you are using its much safer and takes the liability of a blown motor off of your hands.

I believe the rule is .5* of timing per octane point, I need to check with my tuner, as im not 100% sure if that is the rule you are supposed to go by.
