Default Timing Advance, Clear it up in here.

Ok,
well I have read an article online...(MM&FF I believe it was)
did a timing test etc... and they had the most power with the timing advanced +5*
(of course I am talking on a N/A bolt on GT)

they advanced it more... but actually LOST POWER... so they stuck with 5*(STOCK is 10* I believe... so in TOTAL they have 15* of advance)
HOWEVER they said they were only running on 87 Octane...

SO WHAT I AM SAYING IS...
what is the BEST * for a Bolt on GT... running on 91 Octane of course...
what do you run on?/have you seen any more articles that were using higer octane instead of 87?
have any dyno results...where you tested out the timing?

PLEASE let me know,
THANKS!

I have no dyno results, but mines at 15* with full bolt ons, and i run 93..i could prolly go to 17* on 93...but i wanna be near a dyno when i start gettin crazy....

The highest I have ever heard anyone going without losing power or hearing the engine ping, is 16*, thats on 91. I have heard of people running 15*, but they eventually needed to start using 91*.

i don't know first hand, but i've heard a lot that if you go any higher than 15 MAYBE 16, your engine will ping even on 93 octain

One thing to keep in mind is that every car is differant, some might like 15* other might work better at 17*. When you start moddin an engine it's the little things like this that all add up. The only real way to tell is on a dyno and make sure that all the varibles are the same each time and prefferbly you do this all on the same day..

How much power can be had by advancing the timing on a stock engine?

Default RE: Timing Advance, Clear it up in here.

In my old 5.0 days, we tried a few experiments on a dyno with an SN95. I would recommend this only if you're running 93 and live in a warm weather climate unless you feel like changing things around when the weather gets cold. One of the greatest infulences (besides octane and intake charge temp) in knock supression is coolant temperature to the head. My 95 basically had the equivalent of a stock cobra motor and what we did was remove the thermostat, run Redline Water Wetter and water and use a truck relay to wire the ignition fans to full on all the time. Coolant temps stayed low enough that I was able to run 21 degrees of advance on 93 pump without detonation. Measuring the before and after on a 2WD Dynojet netted 12 RWHP. We never tried this on the 4.6 as it was new to us at the time, but I don't see why the same principle wouldn't work. Be careful and try it on a dyno. As long as you observe safe practices, it's possible to squeeze out more ponies without harming anything.

Hope that helps,

Andy

^A Tuner (like Diablo) or the Steeda/BBK timing advancer (manual version)

and yeah good points brought up in here, true to what JD says...
what I will have to do is just dyno it and tune/test it from there.
