Heads & Cams worth it?!?!

RE: Heads & Cams worth it?!?!
When you guys say slap a blower on, do you automatically assume that he will spend all the money to strengthen the bottom end, get machine jobs on the heads, lower compression, etc.? And what are all the necessary thing you need to do when you s/c your engine?

If you can afford to spend the money on a super, I would. If you can't afford that much money at once, ported stock heads and some cams are a great mod.

RE: Heads & Cams worth it?!?!
the mach's have 10:1 compression ratio i believe (correct me if i'm wrong). the ideal compression for a s/c is about 9:1. if you lower your compression and run 9 psi of boost, you will have an amazing machine.

RE: Heads & Cams worth it?!?!
even with the 10.1 compression, the intercooled 4v will make great power and with a good tune and correct a/f will last a long, long time assuming you stay below 10 lbs of boost imo
there are a lot of s/c ed mach ones and 99 cobras running around out there

1) Mach 1's have 10.1:1 C/R Cast pistons and rods, MT's have forged cobra crank, AT are cast.
2) ATI Procharger has an actual kit for the mach1, that incorporates the shaker intake.- Kit is around $4700 new
3) You can put a roots blower on it, but the functionality of the shaker is comprimised. There is a post somewhere on mach1registry.com that shows it, the guy bolted the shaker too the hood, and ran a small bracket or something that still allows for the "shake".
4)Heads - Just pnp the stock heads, more effective, unless your getting stage 2 or 3 heads. Those are around $2400
5)Cams - worth it no matter what your application, s/c, nitrous, turbo, or n/a, they've got grinds for all of em. The average price is $1,095(I think that's VTs cost) to $1600 (Steeda's) for all 4.
6)Forged rotating assy - A std bore is around $2300, (dss racing). But if you're gonna change it, why not bore over? DSS has a forged rotating assy for a MODular 302(using stock block, bored 0.030 over), for $2799 balanced internally.(pistons, rods, rings, crank)
9psi or less, even on stock pistons will yeild alot of power, and as everyone knows, a s/c is more power, but regardless it will cost the same. (provided you do the work, or if you have someone who will do it cheaply...) Add labor in for heads/cams, then it become a lot more costly.... But a s/c is ultimately more bang for the buck (unless you get really high compression, race fuel only motor with really aggressive cams)
Oh, and a dyno tune is def req'd for either :-p

RE: Heads & Cams worth it?!?!
i remember seeing a video of a mach 1 running a procharger at 8 psi pushing about 560 rwhp and that thing could go....oh yea with about 9 psi boost he'll be pushing way more than 410 rwhp cause im pushing 417 on a gt 2v motor and he has a 4v. But yea get the blower man.
