Default axles

there are some things i want to know and this is the best place to ask them i guess.

1 what causes axles to break?
2 how many of 99-04 gt owners have actually broke them?
3 what is the best value or best way to replace the stock ones?
4 at what point should one replace the stock axles?

thanx

Default RE: axles

1. Torque. 400 ft/lbs of torque and a nice hard launch off slicks and they'll snap.

2. I can't accurately say, I'm sure a few have but most who will be breaking them replace them before they break.

3. Best upgrade is 31 spline axles, so you'll need a new carrier. If you want, you can go with even more splines.

4. Your axles will take more abuse than your transmission (especially if it's a T-45, TR3650 may be able to hold out).

Default RE: axles

The axles generally twist before they break. Back when my pops used to drag alot we would paint a striat thin line down the axle. After it twisted the line would curve and we would replace it. An axle only has a super hard outer shell, the inner metal is actually very soft (found this out when we broke one off flush with the outer flange of a ford 9".........how the hell could we get it out......drilled a hole in the center of the axle drill it tap it and then slide hammer it out. there is no housing to romove on a 9" only a third member so you cant pull the cover and try to get out the axle by pushing it through the pumkin).Today technology is different though. If you dont plan on making insain power just get some aftermarket factory spline replacements. They should not break under the loads of even a 500hp motor.

The reason they are soft on the inside is because things like gears and axles are usually case hardened. This is a process that puts more carbon into the steel (they start with a very mild steel) on the outside, and gradually works inside depending on how much carbon is outside of the metal, temperature, pressure, how much is in it, etc.

Usually people step it up to 31 or 33 spline, and Code says he swears by Eaton axles and diffs.

replacing the diff so u can run 31 spline is expensive though isnt it? is it possible to buy 28 spline axles that wont break with 400rwhp or less?

I have a bent rear axle and its making the caliper and caliper holder squeak on the driver's side. Anybody have any idea how much a new one would be from ford?

NEVER go to ford... Unless you like getting ripped off.
