i just took the silencer off of my stock intake for now, was wondering if peopel that have done it noticed a diff in anything? maybe even better or worse mpg?
Before I bought my CAI I took mine out. I didn't notice anything but the sound from sucking more air. They say you gain 5-8 hp but its not enough to feel.
Maybe a very little shot in the butt and a fractional increase in mileage but no biggies. If you want to notice a big change in intake boost you have to do the intake shuffle.....new plenum, throttle body and cold air intake. Your current air intake without the silencer is similar to the common CAI's. You need an "in-fender", cold air model to add a little more yet. The triple combo will give you a noticable boost as they are all meant to work best together. The silencer alone will do very little unless you are currently pushing very high horsepower levels.
My old 1994 5.0 used to pop like that, as does my friends 96 GT. My 99 does not pop without silencer. I think the popping might be because of the mufflers you are using, but the 96 did backfire a lot at really high RPMs and when he power-shifted[:-].
