I still cannot imagine that even adding an inch to both sides would fill up the enormous gap. The reason I ask is that I found some 275/55/17 that i am considering purchaseing.

Those would be HUGE, don't do it, even if they do fit you will lose a **** load of bottom end...

remember, front tires need to be able to TURN, too, without rubbing.
when the tire turns, it should be larger..it's a 3d object, remember, and it's moving on a different plane outward on one side, inward on another side... that outward side, is probably a tad wider at the extreme turns than the tire's given size.

hmmm why a 26? do you see the wheel gap on our cars? i measured and from the top of my 275/40/17 i have 3 and 3/4 inches of gap that is a freakin huge gap....i want to lower my car but i have to keep in mind longtube headers... so i will be lowering 1.6 front 1.5 back..... that will still leave a 2 inch gap how is it not possible to increase the tire size from 26" to 27 inch? so that i only have 1" gap? my handheld tuner can adjust the computer so that it believes the stock tire diameter is 27"

275/50/15's will fill up your wheel wells nicely. trust me.
55 is a big sidewall. what size wheel are you trying to put these on? i wouldn't put that on a stock 17x8 inch wheel.

i have the rims on my car in my sig... 17x9 cobra R's... and 285/40/17 will fit them fine

I was asking the thread starter about wheels.
275/50/15 and 285/40/17 are 2 completely different tires.
