Throw out bearing and clutch

RE: Throw out bearing and clutch
i would call around and get your prices and find out everyone's warranty. But be sure they replace the TOB and resurface the flywheel. Two critical steps for an excellent clutch job.
some independent shops give a quality warranty and you are probably better off going there.

I am not sure exactly what clutch I have in my car, although I have seen it through the check hole and the pressure plate appeared to be painted orange. The only clutch I know that is like this is centerforce dual friction, is there others? Also, it does release about 1 inch down from the top...is this a sign of it going bad. It doesnt really slip though, at all...and I am running a little over 300 to the ground.

just because it releases what you perceive to be high doesn't mean it's going bad neccessarily. It may just be out of adjustment.
I read on alldata a test from ford.... put parking brake on, and in 4th gear hold engine rpm at 3000 rpm and gradually release clutch to completely out... it should kill the engine by doing this and this tells you it's still got life.
this is pretty retarded though as you fry a ton of friction material in doing so. I presume when you romp on it you don't get any slippage?
as long as it's not slipping or making noises, you are probably totally fine.
Centerforce are the only clutches TO MY KNOWLEDGE that are orange, but there may be others.

It's probably getting worn. like monkeydude said I guess you don't need to worry about changing it until your clutch starts slipping when you're already cruising with your foot off the clutch.

yep! we had a ford explorer back in the day. (5 speed) cruising and all of a sudden engine rpms jump and truck starts slowing. uh oh... we take it to the shop. they go to pull it into the bay, the clutch all out died at the shop. they did the clutch and all was well. this was before I was a heavy gear head.... but it had been acting weird for a few weeks prior to going out... my parents like to wait until the last minute

haha... that was a great freaking truck!!!!
but yeah clutches you usually can totally tell when they ar egoing out. A simple check is get an open road, and just rail on your car. If you hear the engine rpm drop quickly with each shift and get a nice kick, i'm pretty sure your clutch is doin good! If your engine kinda revs and gradually slows down.. .it's a slippin!

I see, so I guess I'm still in good shape b/c whenever I shift hard it seems like the tranny almost kicks in too hard...maybe I should stop dropping the clutch? When you're trying to go the fastest possible is it necessary to drop the clutch between shifts?

RE: Throw out bearing and clutch
well, i wouldn't say all out drop the clutch, just release it very quickly. When I am trying to haul a$$, I just floor it, shift point push clutch in, and release clutch and hit gas all at once...
but if it grabs hard you are probably good. When it starts to slip when you let off the clutch, like a lot, then you know you gotta start saving. clutches should last AT LEAST 50k miles, if not more.
