Default Overdrive question

When racing with the OD off, is it possible to still have the car go to 4th at WOT or is my car messed up

i'm not 100% but i'm pretty sure having it off prevents you from going into 4th. overdrive IS 4th gear.

does racing with it off help? why would it be better to race without 4th gear when by that time the race is over anyway?

OD is for cruising speed in an automatic, it engages your torque converter clutch so you get the best fuel economy, turning OD off tells the computer not to engage your TCC so you can stay in fourth and still kep your revs up.

(for a 5 spd manual yes 5th is overdrive, but in a 4 spd auto, 4th is)

so it's a 5 speed automatic and not a 4 speed automatic like most cars???? and why would i need to keep my revs up in fourth gear in a 1/4 mile race?

wrong, torque conv. still locks up with od off, od off just keeps the car from shifting into 4th, that is it. your torque converter still operates the same with od on and off, it will still lock up for best fuel economy and unlock when under a load, and when under more of a load, your mafuggin auto downshifts.

with od off im at 2000 rpms going 45mph (third gear, tq conv locked), in 4th, its about 1,500 locked, and 1,750 unlocked.

i know for a fact my tq. conv. locks up with od off.

i found that if i let out the gas and push it back in to the position i had it, the tq conv unlocks much easier than tryin to push the gas in to make it unlock, usually you get a downshift when you do that, anyways, thats my 2 cents, from my experience with my auto.

that's what i thought......so why would it help in racing to have it off????

it doesnt help, unless you have a limp foot and the car forces itself to 4th gear during your race, then your ****ed.

actually from roll is the only time i'd use it, 3rd gear pull

that would be around a 60mph roll

a 40 mph roll in an auto would require 2nd gear to have the best take off, so you'd bring 'er down to 2nd manually.

those are the only racing instances where you really need to turn od off, or shift to 2nd in your auto.
