Default HP DIfference BW 5.0 and 4.6

Just bought me a 87 notch dirt cheap. I have found a nice 97 GT totaled out and I have debated on changing that notch to a 4.6 mostly just for the h$ll of it. Does anyone know the horsepower difference between that 97 4.6 and the 87 5.0. The 87 is bone stock. The 97 has got underdrive pulleys and the computer has a stage 2 chip. Thanks in advance for the replies.

Mod the 5.0... Parts are more abundant and it is cheaper to make it go fast.

Meh dont do it. 5.0's are the cheapest to mod. Just spend the money on your 5.0 man. You will be spankin stock 4.6's in no time. Then, if you make it a turbo fox, you will be spankin most of anything out there in no time.lol

never knew what a stage 2 chip can do for it, but on that note the 5.0 is cheaper to mod, the 4.6 2v (from the GT) is not a pushrod engine like yours. Pushrod engines as you know are torque monsters, the modular 4.6s are suppose to give more power uptop and rev better, doesn't seem to hold too true though. I think the 5.0 is a superior engine personally.

Yeah I could get a heck of a 5.0 for the money i would spend changing over the 4.6. But Im probably going to do it anyway, mostly because I dont race it and I love the sound that the 4.6 enginges have vs the 5.0. It is just a cruising car. So again my question is am I going to lose any HP going from the 5.0 to the 4.6. If so how much? I would like to have a comparison figure, Ive not been able to find one yet.

no you actually gain horsepower from your stock 5.0 to the lightly modded 4.6

If your looking for a 4.6 the last one you should be looking at are the 96-98 NON PI HEADS 4.6's,There the slowest mustangs produced since the mustang 2!!

But yeah...Mod the fox you will get more power out of it

It sounds like a cool project! The 4.6 will get you a more efficient cruising car...

The engines are the same HP give or take 5 but the 5.0 is going to make its torque at 1000 less RPMs.

I would go with a PI engine though.

I was looking into swapping my engine (although it does run great, just comparing that to PI head-swap) to a PI out of a totaled 2004.

Found one locally for $1600 /w 15K miles...

Unless the 5.0 engine is really used up, the NPI 4.6 is just not going to seem as fast.

The chip is probably worthless. Maybe 5hp max.

I have heard that the PI engines are better. But I have found a 97 locally with underdrive pulleys, chip, 3.73 gears and posi trac, 17 icnh bullit wheels with good tires and a TKO transmission. Not to mention it has some nice front seats I would like to put in mine. I can buy it for right around $1800. This way I can get the whole shibang wiring harness and all. I think it would be a wicked little ride even if it wouldnt be the fastest in the world.

Thanks

just do a PI headswap and its faster than a 99-04 GT, gosh I'm so sick of telling people that. NPI motors=More Potential
