Default whinning

I have a 04 GT 5 spd, i just had 3.73's installed and about a week later i'm hearing this horrible whinning noise and it only does it when the car is in gear....soon as i take it out of gear it stops......is this a rear end problem? i'm positive that the backlash was perfect on it cause i watched them do everything what else could it be? my transmission has been acting up (grinding when i slam it in 3rd) could it be a possible tranny problem.....any input would be great..............thanks

It's most likely the gears.

Could be gears. When the trans is in gear, it would put enough load on the rear end to make em whine. Have the shop check the rear again.

well i'd have to hear it, but i'm 100% positive its your new gears. Even though you had them professionally installed, doesn't mean they didn;t mess anything up. Gears are very tedious to install b/c they require precise placement. Take your car back in and have them mess with it. Either that or find somewhere that does nothing but drivetrain work, they'll know exactly what they're doing.

What kind of gears do you have? I have Motives and they whine some at speed.

if you say you take it out of gear, it probably isn't the rear end. See if you can coast with it in neutral and see where the sound goes

Just because your transmission isn't in gear........doesn't mean the rear ring and pinion is not turning. If its the rear end, you would probably notice it more when you are slowing down or winding down if you're in gear.

hmm, i would think they would whine more under load and the taking it outta gear and the whining stops makes sense to me, but then again, i think a pigpen is something to write with....

If so that is the problem.. and to fix it, replace them ASAP with the ford 4.10's!

I have Motive 4.10's and I have no problem with gear whine. I have ridden in a Mustang that had real bad whine, his only whinned when he let off the gas and let the car wind down, or if he was coasting to a stop. It was usually around 40mph I think.
