Underdrive pullys: Fact or Fiction?

Underdrive pullys: Fact or Fiction?
I have a 5-speed 99GT. I heard a myth that underdrive pullys were not worth the investment because it slows down your water pump, causing your engine to run hotter. Is this true? Are they worth the investment? Which pullys would you suggest? Thanks.

I have read a couple articles with dyno results that usually show something like 5-8hp with underdrive pullys. That's not too bad for the roughly $100 investment. You shouldn't worry about the engine running hotter. Steeda seems to be a popular brand, but I personally don't have them installed.

I used underdrive pulleys on a MK VIII (4.6-4cam)for several years with no overheating problems whatsoever. The only problem I have heard of is if you have a killer stereo or other large power drain you can overload the alternator at idle speed, this usually is not a problem except in heavy stop and go traffic. You can overcome this by putting the stock pulley back on the alternator.I like the pulleys because they turn all the accessories on the front of the engine slower and this can only add life to things like water pumps,a-c compressors and alternator bearings, all expensive to replace. The Lincoln I used the pulleys on had 158000 miles on the original water pump and all the other belt driven parts except the alt ,but that was an electrical problem. And yes they do free up HP.

I installed them, noticed some difference right away, no problems at all with AC, heat, stock Mach stereo, lights, etc. The surprising thing was how much lighter the steeda pullies are than the stock ones, no wonder its easier on the engine, easy and cheap 8-10 rwhp in my book.

Thanks, I appreciate everybody's help. All it took was some simple tools lying around and an impact wrench. I was still working on my time at the track, but they took off anywhere from .1 to .2 seconds off the quartermile. Can't complain there.
