Depending on what your car has (not too familiar w/ 97's), whether its a speedo cable setup, or just a vehicle speed sensor. If its a cable setup, remove the cable from the trans with the sensor attached, look at the gear at the end, if its damaged that could cause your problem. If its just a sensor then Id suspect its faulty. Another possiblility, not very likely but not out of the question, is the actual guage is getting stuck. Id suspect the sensor or the gear. If the gear is damaged also inspect the gear inside the trans for damage. Also note the color of the gear as thats how they identify how many teeth are on it. If you get a replacement from ford make sure its the same color and tooth count.

I have the same problem w/ my 97 right now. But w/ mine my check engine light came on and when I have the rpms low enough the car just stalls. So watch out. I am getting mine looked at later this week so for now it is sitting. I have 3:73's so I replaced my speedo gear w/ a new one and thinking that might be the problem. If you need a new speedo gear I will sell you mine for 5 bucks. I have it sitting in the bag I got my new white one in. By the way my original one is red. Good Luck Graig

anybody as or had this probleme?
I had the same exact problem with my 94 ranger. They had to replace the speedometer. If thats the same issue with yours, then your whole guage cluster may have to be replaced because its all one piece.
