With the engine off, push your gas pedal down as far as it will go. Place a brick to hold it down. Go look in the engine bay. In most cases, the throttle isn't fully open. On mine, there was still an inch of cable to go before the throttle hit its stops. So you could be flooring your pedal but not really giving it all. By taking up some of the slack in the cable, you can get to WOT before the gas pedal is pushing carpet.

This may not apply to everyone.
