Default IRS suspension....

I know this has probably been asked plenty of times but i cant find it anywhere... I am trying to go IRS in the rear like the cobras. Is it really worth it? I talked to a guy and he said it will slow my car down alot.

Well, it weighs more than the standard differential. I would think that the added weight might negate any advantages of an IRS. I even heard that some late model Trans-Am racers opted or prefered not to use IRS as the handling improvement was marginal at best, and not worth the added weight.

It'd be really cool to have one though, and to think that it supposively just bolts right up...

i've thought about this for a long time too...Control Freak suspensions makes IRS and SLA front suspsension kits for mustangs so i would go aftermarket.....i think Griggs Racing does too right?....anyway it makes sense to think the car would handle better with an IRS instead of the solid axle....but tell that to a Nascar engineer or any of the current Mustang racing teams in the various different motorsports leagues that still use the 8.8 or 9" Ford rearend

The question to ask yourself is what is your ultimate goal? Day to day handling or speed?

IRS - Pros - better handling than solid axle in corners and for daily driving
cons - heavier, weaker, and not good for drag racing (wheel hop)

unless you are autocrossing or somthign like that its not worth it. thats why you see alot of cobra guys talk about wheel hop and changing to a solid axle. once you get some high hp your rear end is gonna be your week point if you have a irs.
