Default changed diff. fluid for almost nothin

well another perk of working at the dealer. I was talking to this one cool tech there about changin my diff fluid as it's the only thing that hasn't been done yet by me, and before i knew he had a bunch of 1/2 full diff fluid containers together and had the cover plate off drainin the fluid.

All I had to buy was a bottle of the friction modifier ($10 regular, $3.50 my price) and I bought him a monster drink.

I put in motorcraft fully synthetic 75/140 fluid with the motorcraft synthetic friction modifier. Works just as smooth as always. The crap that came out was black, but there were NO shavings or particles or chipped teeth so until something breaks, I'm leaving it as is. When something does break, I'm gettin gears.

Hey George,

Not to hijack but, does the diff. fluid go into the axles as well? My sn95 has a leakey back right axle and it makes a whinning rubbing noise everynow and then.

Thanks for the help.

Yup. The axle shafts carry the fluid out to the ends. That whining noise could be a bad bearing.

yeah that fluid goes out to the end on this setup. Luckily I have no leaks at this moment, and there were no shavings or anything in there. Just dirty ready to be changed fluid.

This technician is one of the nicest guys ever, he's always helping me out for free or cheap.

I'm not doin gears until something breaks... but when they do, probably 4.10s

Woah... yes of course it can. There's no drain plug, and only one fill plug. There's no pump or anything to move the fluid, the gears do that... in actuality, they just splash around in the fluid that's there and it's enough.

Take the bolts from the cover off, gently pry the bottom off with a screwdriver or something (be careful not to damage your cover or the diff housing). It'll then start draining out.

After it stops flooding out, take off the cover completely, and clean up the gasket around the edges, make it as clean as possible... do the same to the differential housing. Take a small tube of RTV sealant and make a bead around the edge of the housing (or the cover, your choice). Be a little careful though, too much and it'll end up in the differential... too little and it'll leak. You need enough to make a good seal. Put the cover back on and bolt down.

After that's back on and your new gasket has dried, the fill plug is on the front of the differential, driver's side. Pour more oil in till it starts coming back up out of the hole. Put fill plug back on, clean up mess.

Simpler than changing engine oil.
