Default check engine light

The check engine light has come on in my 96 GT. I took it to the garage, whereupon the light turned itself off! So they couldn't do anything. Now it's back on again, and has been for a few days. The car seems fine to drive, although it vibrates a bit on the freeway and there's a clanging noise coming from the trunk (trunk is empty)...? None of the other warning lights are on.

Any ideas...? Am I damaging my car by driving it in this condition...?

Thanks,

Richard

either way that garage doesnt know what they're doing then! The CEL system stores codes even if the light is off! You can recall previous codes stored in the system.

Go to an Autozone. They do the scans for free. They usually will not do it if the light is off. So explain to them you really need it checked and as long as they are not @$$holes they should check it. They will most likely not be able to tell you what the code means, but they can give you the code and then call ford and ask them what that code means.
