Default my 4.10's

Quick question: I know there are millions of gear threads and I've searched but I cant find an answer to this question. I have 4.10 gears on my 2001 GT, I've never driven a stock one so I dont really know the difference between stock and the 4.10's. I've heard that they pull harder in the low end. And I know on the highway in 5th gear my rpm's are higher than stock. I know they make me shift more than usual, but what exactly do they help?

ok your stock gears were prolly 3.27's
every one time the drive shaft spins the tires move 3.27 rotations.
with 4.10s every one time the driveshaft spin the tires move 4.10 rotations. So thus you have more accleration but less top speed.

they help your acceleration. with stock gears thrid gear would fall on its face, and with the gears it gives it more power.allows your car to stay higher in the rpm range allowing to see your full potential.

you get worse gas mileage....and you can spin your tires alot easier. with stock gears when i punched it in first it would only spin a little, now i dont get traction until 3rd when i get on it as hard as i can

I do notice that traction loss. My tread is pretty worn, I have 245/45/17's....I dont want drag radials, but what kind and size of street tire should I get for better traction with the 4.10's? I dont want anything too big like 315's.

You can go to a 275/40-17. If you don't have to worry about snow/ice, go for a summer tire. They'll give you a lot better traction in dry and rain.
