Default when is aftercooler needed?

You see kits without and kits with. At what point would a aftercooler be needed? I am thinking about a supercharger and was wondering about aftercoolers. I want to be around 350 -400 hp. More of a streetfighter then a strip car.

I think an aftercooler is is air-to-water to keep templeratures down. You can also go with the more popular intercooler which is air-to-air.
you dont really need them unless you want to boost more than what it boosts without a aftercooler.

A intercooler or aftercooler cools down the air after it was pushed thru the SC. That allows you to advance your timing more then when it is not cooled. So what ever boost you run you gain hp with a intercooler or aftercooler. Because of obvious reasons = more boost creates more heat in general it is recommended to run an aftercooler/intercooler if you run more then 10 psi boost.

Air gets hotter when it's compressed. I emailed kenne bell once and asked if I could run 8psi with out the heat exhanger and they didn't recommend it.

But don't take this as the end all be all, because they may have been trying to make a buck.

i was actually going to write a post on this, or at least the importance of cooling. I just had my car retuned and now runs much better. I was seeing 8# of boost in the manifold (10 on my gauge) and at max boost, intake temps were like 160-165 due to the boost and the typical hot day here in vegas. At max boost, the timing was being pulled back by the iat to 8*. If i could keep those intake temps at somewhere near the ambient, i would probably see 25-30 more whp. I have a smaller pulley to put on, but again, more boost, more heat, more timing pulled out. It seems like fighting a losing battle. The vortech after cooler is 1800 [:@]. May someday have to look into a diy intercooler, but have spent alot getting the car where it is now, so have to be happy. new numbers 400/380. Curious to see how it does once it cools down out here. Also put in a switch for a 100 octane tune, may try that once or twice to see how much better it runs.

Personally, I'd NEVER S/C or Turbo a car w/o an Inter/Aftercooler.. There are too many reasons not to...

- Better boost efficiency
- Cooler Intake Temps
- Less knock because of it
- More timing/More boost

I mean, the insurance you get, and the added performance gained is far worth the extra money to do it right in the beginning...

i've been running 10psi non-cooled for a year with no problems at all. no knocking, no nothin. it's all in the tune!

i put a snow performance boost cooler on though so i can get some more power. cheap alternative to an intercooler.

i talked to my tuner about the boost cooler and he voiced the running out of cooler or clogged jet scenario, so he doesnt care for them. But as you pointed out, it would be like 25% of the cost of an i/c and help out alot. So i will have to see. Cant afford to lay out the dough now.

I dont see the issue with not running an i/c. I just think you get to teh point where you would probably need it, and i think i am there if i want more power safely.

Snow has that covered with a unit called Safe Injection
