Default shift kit, should I?

I have heard from many people on here that a shift kit really helps an automatic, but my local mustang shop says they only make it feel like a harder shift, but do not improve quarter mile times. So which is it? I am getting a tuner soon, which also firms shifts, so do i still need a shift kit?
